Welcome Message from the Head of Department

The programme in English language provides a high level of proficiency for graduates of English, and generates ample competence and skills of communication. Great attention is devoted to the achievement of improved knowledge of English and the acquisition of adequate skills in speaking and writing in the language facilitating in English graduates adequate proficiency in pronunciation, articulateness in speech, correctness of grammar and usage with elegance and style in diction in the chosen variety of English for use in the various administrative and professional job opportunities available in the labour market, in literary and creative writing domains, and in postgraduate studies in language and literature.

Brief on the Department

The Languages Department was established in the 2013/2014 academic session with the admission of 38 undergraduate students. The pioneer Head of Department Mr. Dauda Bello, Mr. Patrick Bleambo, Mr. Abubakar A Song, Mr. Stephen A. Lagu and a part time staff from Federal Collage of Education Yola Mr Salihi Ateequ were the pioneer academic staff of the Department. The Department was initially under the Faculty of Art, Social and Management Science before it was brought under the faculty of Arts, with the Department of History.

The Department presently runs a B.A. English with a combined specialization in both Language and literature fields. As the Programe grows there is plan to separate B.A. English Language and B.A.  Literature in English.

The Department of Languages is a vibrant academic unit committed to the study and promotion of local, national, and international languages. It serves as a hub for linguistic excellence, cultural exploration, and intellectual engagement. The department offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs that emphasize language acquisition, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.

Since it’s establishment, the Department has grown from a modest unit into a comprehensive academic body offering diverse language programs. It has continuously evolved to meet the needs of a globalized world, adding new specializations and expanding its research agenda over the years.
