The General Studies Unit (GST) plays a very significant role in the University. It has a pool of lecturers from different field of study; who are grounded in research and teaching. The unit is a melting pot for both staff and students; it provides them with a memorable conducive learning experience. It builds synergy and promotes social interaction and collaboration among students through developing life skills and well-versed educational experience that prepares them for success in their respective field of studies. The unit provides a platform for students from different fields of study in the university; Science, Social Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Law, Medicine, Arts, Administration, Management and so on to meet and interacts while leaning. By and large they are prepared for a wide range of careers and personal pursuit. Students are also equipped with critical thinking and problem solving skills, where citizenship and civic engagement are promoted and are enabled to participate fully in democratic process as well support religious and cultural tolerance.  

Brief Historical Background of GST Unit

The General Studies Unit was carved out of the former school of foundation and General Studies on the 31st of March 2008. The General Studies Courses were run by the School of foundation and General Studies since the inception of the University in 2002/2003. As the university expanded, the need arise to have an independent Unit for General Studies. Thus, the General Studies Unit was established in March, 2008 to run all General Studies courses in the University, and the first coordinator was appointed on 31st March 2008. The unit teach courses such as communication skills, contemporary health Issues, leadership skills, Nigerian Peoples and Culture, peace and conflict resolution, Philosophy, logic and Human existence, use of library, ICT and study skills, communication in French and Arabic, and host of other courses. These courses are though from 100 level to 300 levels.

Goal & Objectives of GST Unit

Goal: to foster social skills and produce well-rounded morally and intellectually capable graduates with vision and entrepreneurial skills in an environment of Peace and social cohesiveness.

Objectives: the objectives of the General studies Unit programme consist of the following;

  1. Acquisition of broad –based skills and development that goes beyond their specialized area of study for the survival of the individual and society.
  2. The development of intellectual capabilities of individuals to understand, appreciate and promote peaceful co-existence.
  3. Produce graduate with analytical and critical minds that allows them to handle complex issues in a dynamic world.
  4. Preparing students for a post-university life with opportunities for job competencies.
  5. Produce graduates with interdisciplinary capabilities and understanding that will enable them blend-in and appreciate other fields of study.
  6. Production of graduates with effective communication skill; writing, speaking and presentation regardless of the discipline.
