Introduction
The Faculty of Social and Management Sciences started in 2002 with two Departments namely: Business Studies and Public Administration. The Department of Business Studies was running three programmes consisting of Accountancy, Business Administration and economics. As a result of growth and expansion these three programmes subsequently became separate Departments. The Department of Accountancy and Business Administration gained full accreditation of the National Universities Commission in 2007 while the Department of Economics was given full accreditation in 2008. The Department of Public Administration got fully accredited by the National University Commission in 2005. The Departments is currently running two programmes namely: Political Science and Public Administration. In view of this, the name of the Department was changed to Department of Political Science and Public Administration in 2009.
The philosophy and objectives of the four Departments in the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences are consistent with the basic minimum academic standards of the National Universities Commission.
The objectives of the Faculty derive from the vision and mission of the University.
The objectives of the Faculty, therefore include:
(a) Provision of conducive atmosphere for learning and teaching as well as research activities.
(b) Producing graduates who will be equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes not only for servicing the private and public sectors of the economy but also for self reliance in terms of job creation.
(c) Inculcate in graduates, the values of honest, integrity, transparency and accountability in the management of community, private and public organizations
(d) Recruiting and retaining high level academic and non-academic staff that will help in realizing the objectives of the Faculty and the University, etc.
Programmes
The Faculty runs Diploma, Graduate and Postgraduate programmes in the various
Departments.
The Postgraduate progammes cover academic studies leading to the award of academic
degrees of M. Sc and Ph. D and Professional studies at Postgraduate Diploma and Master
levels.
The Faculty presently runs two professional Masters studies in the Department of Business Administration (Master in Business Administration (M.B.A) and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration (Master in Public Administration (M.P.A). Two Postgraduate Diploma programmes are also run in Business Administration (PGDM -Postgraduate Diploma in Management) and Public
Administration (PGDPA- Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration).
The Faculty runs undergraduate studies leading to the following bachelor degrees:
1. B. Sc Accountancy
2. B. Sc Business Administration
3. B. Sc Economics
4. B. Sc Political Science
5. B. Sc Public Administration
6. B.A English
7. B.A History
Diploma programmes are mounted based on need in the environment of the University
provided candidates posses minimum of five credits at ordinary level in the West African
Examination Council or National Examination Council or its equivalents.
Admission Requirements
(i) Undergraduate programmes
The Faculty admits candidates based on requirements approved by the University.
The requirements include:
1. University Matriculation Examination (UME) Applicants
The Senior Secondary School Certificate/General Certificate of Education or
National Examinations Council (SSCE/GCE/NECO) ordinary level credit passes at not
more than two sittings in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics,
Economics /Government/ History/ Commerce /Accounting/Book keeping and
acceptable score in the UME.
2. Direct Entry Applicants
a) Five O’ Level credit passes including English language, Mathematics,Economics/Government/ History/ Commerce /Accounting/Book keeping at not more thantwo sittings with atleast two Advance (‘A’) credit passes in relevant subjects.
b) Diploma (Credit) passes Adamawa Stat University Consultancy Services (ADSUCONS) Ltd in relevant field.
c) National Diploma with merit or lower credit, including five O’ Level credit in English language, Mathematics, Economics/Accounting/Book keeping and two other relevant subjects.
Other admission requirement for undergraduate applicants is that candidates must have attained the age of sixteen (16) on or before the beginning of the academic year of entry
into the University.
ii) Postgraduate
Admission into postgraduate programmes is based on the possession of admission requirements for the relevant undergraduate programme and graduation with a good honours degree (atleast B. Sc Honours Lower Division) from a recognized University.
For applicants into Ph. D programmes they need to have a pass at Master level from a recognized University.
BRIEF ON DEPARTMENTS
The following are the departments in the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences:
Subsequently, during the 2012/2013 session, the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences was renamed to the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences with the introduction of two addition departments:
1. Department of History (BA History)
2. Department of Languages (BA English)
ADMINISTRATION OF THE FACULTY
The Faculty is managed by a pool of academic and non-academic staff. The Faculty is Headed by a Dean and assisted by a Deputy Dean. There is also Faculty Officer, who is
Representative of the Registrar, taking charge of all Registry matters of the Faculty.
Presently, the staff that constitute the Deanage of the Faculty are as follows:
