About the Department
Marketing Minds for a Changing World
The idea of establishing the marketing department has been on for as long as the parent department existed (Department of Business Administration). It will be recalled that the mother Department offered B.Sc Business Administration, with options in Accounting, Marketing and Banking and finance. Thus, Marketing Department has been a core consideration in the entire concept of the Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences. The Department of marketing offering B.Sc Marketing was established in 2019 and effectively commenced academic activities in the 2020/2021 academic session with its first set of 54 undergraduate students.
The Department has impressively grown over the years. The population of the students has grown from 54 to over 100 students and a staff population of 10 tenure Lecturers, one sabbatical, and other staff ranging from professorship cadre to graduate assistant.
The department has fully equipped staff offices and library and laborratory. The whole idea of marketing as a department rose from the significant role marketing plays in the economic equation of any country, including Nigeria.
PHILOSOPHY, AIM, OBJECTIVES AND VISION OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM
The general philosophy of the undergraduate training in marketing is to provide the student with quality education and training that will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, motivate self-confidence and entrepreneurial spirit, and help him/her to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of marketing. The training should be rooted in the interactive pedagogical methodology, developed to produce graduates that can excel anywhere around the globe.
AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME
- To equip students with sound marketing strategies as well as relevant and adequate knowledge and skills for decision making in the marketing of goods and services that will serve as the fountain and epitome of marketing professionals in the globe.
- To train marketers with expanded imaginative capacity to demonstrate unusual creative thinking through the use of the major marketing theories, models, concept and skills as well as critical mind-sets with pure and applied ideas in providing practical solutions to societal and institutional problems.
- To provide an intellectual environment that enables the students realize their values and potentials, broaden their horizon, creativity, and promote the spirit of self-reliance as key drivers to nation building and development.
- To create a desirable atmosphere for positive behavioral changes which will enable students develop values like hard work, and virtues for national objectives.
- To produce marketers whose knowledge of planning, designing, pricing, promoting, distributing and exchange will be useful in the economy and society in order to satisfy the customer’s wants.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The major objective of degree programme in marketing is to produce a consummate graduate of global rating. However, the specific objectives are to:
- Equip students with relevant and adequate knowledge and skills for decision making in marketing goods and services;
- Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the practice of marketing beyond the sale of goods and services;
- Produce high level personnel that can contribute to the extension of frontiers of knowledge in marketing through research and publication; and
- Develop in students, leadership, entrepreneurship and interpersonal skills as well as competencies that will adequately spur them to be innovative in job creation, and contribute to national development.
VISION
To be one of the leading centers of excellence in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large in teaching, learning and research in Marketing. The program shall provide students with requisite training through a regime of courses that can enable them compete nationally and globally. The program shall also, strive to enable graduates to not only be self-reliant but also develop widely defined marketing plans and strategies that will stand them out from their competitors.
