Historical background
The actualization of the Adamawa state University is one of the most important public empowerment scheme realized in the state. The project is unquestionably critical to the development of strong and virile mind in Adamawa State both academically, socially and politically. Adamawa State University Health Services commenced its operations February, 2003 with aim of attaining the physical, social and mental health for both staff and students of University including community in accordance with the minimum set standard by National University Commission (N.U.C) and World Health Organization (W.H.O.).

Mission: To provide a preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative health care delivery system and an environmentally friendly disposition sensitive to the needs of the society it serves. It embraces staff, students, staff families and their dependants.
Vision: To ensure a sound health for both staff and students as well as University community both physically and mentally.
Philosophy: The University Health Services is established to maintain utmost level of sound health of both staff and students which remains a sin aqua none that an unhealthy mind and body cannot impact knowledge or acquire same, as illness is the most important factor contributing to colossal loss in working hours worldwide.
Services: Generally speaking the aim of Adamawa State University and the University Medical Unit is to provide free medical services for staff, staff family and students of this institution. It’s also provides primary health care facilities with the aim of promotive, curative as well as rehabilitative services.
Laboratory Unit
The unit is headed by a lab technologist. Major activity includes laboratory investigation for routing and diagnostic purpose. Not all laboratory tests are done free. However, provision are been made to obtain reliable test result at highly subsidized rate. As an interim measure, centre. These are ABO blood grouping system and Rhesus D factor, Malaria Parasite, Stool Microscopy, Urine Microscopy and their respective analysis. Others are packed cell Volume (PCV), Acid fast Bacili (AFB), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Pregnancy test , Hemoglobin Genotype, Widal, Erythrocytes Sedimentation Rates (ESR)etc.
Pharmacy Department: all available drugs are dispensed free. They are however dispensed only with a prescription made by a medical Doctor on duty. Occasionally, unavailable drugs are prescribed at the patient additional cost.
Nursing Department: Environmental Health/PHC: Routine immunizations and vaccinations are usually free and are administered by the public health officer attached to the unit. These include: BCG, DPT, Hepatitis B antigens, Measles vaccine and oral poliomyelitis vaccine, cholera Vaccine etc.
Medical Record: This Department is in charge of keeping records of patients and staff and students registration. Registration with the University Health centre is compulsory and it is the basic criteria necessary for one to benefit from the Health services. The Health centre does not recognize or attend to any unregistered staff or students.
Consultation: Is free confirming the fact that the university gives free medical services. However, students are required to register with the health centre to enable the health center
- Plan ahead.
- Update medical record
- Obtain statistical data.
How to register
- Collect form from the university health centre and fill it accordingly.
- Go to Laboratory for basic Laboratory investigations E.g Urinalysis, blood group, and genotype and stool microscopy. Acid fast Bacilli (AFB) etc.
- Students are required to do chest X-ray. (CXR)
- Physical examination, such as Heith , Weight, Blood pressure, pulse rate is done. The form is then completed and signed by Medical Doctor.
- No students should undergo medical examination fitness twice unless otherwise indicated.
The completed form is then used to open the file the Medical Record unit therefore each and every student in the University is advice to open a file in the clinic. This file is necessary for medical record keeping.
Benefit of registration
- Provide free and standard medical care.
- Provide sick bay facilities.
- Take note of those with special medical conditions such as tuberculoses, Diabetes, hypertension, Epilepsies and provide special care.
- Enable the medical centre plan, fo r example, purchase drugs depnd on number of cases reported for each cases reported for each diseases,
- Provision of facilities of depends on the number of staff and students
- Manpower development
- Documentation of vital events.
